A: That depends on what you plan to do in that area.
4-6" to plant grass
8-10" for shrubs, sidewalk or driveway install
<12-16" to plant a tree in the same location
Q: What about surrounding roots, do those need to be removed too?
A: In short, no, the roots of trees spread all over yours and possibly any neighbouring properties, the stump 'crown' is ground away and the remaining roots will decompose with time. A: The long answer to that is, depending on the type of tree, some trees send up suckering shoots from roots left in the ground that will come back year after year. In order to get rid of those roots additional grinding may be required, in the least cut any shoots that appear, they will stop appearing if trimmed out after about 3-4 years.

How to measure a stump:
The min. price to come out with a truck, stump grinder and an operator to do a stump is $200 *
* If a mound of dirt surrounding a stump also needs to be ground down, the width of the mound to be ground down to grade is also measured.
Pricing Exceptions:
The presence of rocks, concrete, metal, etc... must first be removed or worked around, and this adds to the cost of the stump removal.
Estimate ranges can be given over the phone or with the use of pictures sent by email, but exact pricing is given once the job is quoted onsite. There is a $50-75 minimum for any stump grinding job. Ask your neighbours, they may have stumps that require grinding as well, allowing us to put together a package price for the one service call saving you money in the process.
After stump grinding:
Stump grinding reduces stumps to wood chip mulch that we back fill into the hole where the stump used to be. Most of our clients use it for their flower beds, gardens or around the bases of trees but some request removal for an additional charge.

If left will a stump continue to grow?
It depends on the species of tree that was removed as you can see by the picture.
When a live tree is cut down, the majority of the roots soon stop growing because there is no longer the photosynthesis in the leaves to encourage growth of roots. In most cases, the roots stop growing within a matter of days or weeks, and die shortly thereafter.
Some tree species develop sprouts or suckers from the stump itself for years after the tree has been removed and if allowed to grow, these sprouts or suckers will produce unstable trees that can break off in a wind storm.
